Light Moments
There’s a hole in our church sanctuary. A gap in the front pew on the far-left side.
DG’s usual seat.
He’s been away from our Sunday morning service for a while now. The health issues that have dogged him since his birth appear to be gaining ground, advancing like a relentless army.
Who knew the absence of one teenage boy could be felt so keenly?
When I started this column, I chose to refrain from using the names of those I mention out of respect for their privacy. Even my husband is known to you as “Mister.”
But as this young man appears in my mind, “DG” feels off. Cold, matter of fact, like a reference in a report. So, from here on, I’ll call him Sunshine.
Because that’s what he brings to every interaction. Warmth and light.
He was probably one of the first to greet Mr. Pettit and me when we started attending our church a couple of years ago. I say that with some certainty, because if he sees you in the church foyer you will be greeted. And not in the way our mamas taught us, speaking and smiling as the proper thing to do, even if the person before us is as engaging as a tuna.
No, when Sunshine says “Hello,” you feel like he’s been standing there waiting for you to show up. The spark in his eyes says, “Thank goodness you made it! I’m so glad you’re here!”
But his conversations with fellow church members are subdued compared to his joyful worship of God.
When the music begins, his hands go up like he’s reaching for Heaven as he sings. His smile becomes even wider. I don’t believe the rest of the congregation exists for him in those moments; it’s Sunshine and the Lord enjoying each other’s company.
I can’t imagine the glory I’d witness if I had the eyes to see beyond this realm. Would I see the Holy Spirit dancing in Sunshine’s heart? Jesus laughing at his side? Light from the Father pouring down from His throne?
When I’m distracted by lists and fears, singing on autopilot as my mind churns, one glance across the sanctuary reminds me why I’m there. Not to wallow, but to worship.
But now there’s a gap in the front row on the far-left side. I hope that it’s filled very soon as Sunshine returns to claim his seat. In the meantime, I pray for him and his family. I ask for healing and supernatural peace.
And I thank God for placing such a teacher in our midst.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (ESV)
