Echoes of Eden off US-33

Echoes of Eden off US-33

The colors called out to me from the roadside.

Mr. Pettit and I spotted the market on our way to Massanutten Resort, a destination we’ve been considering for a future family gathering. But we were focused on our reconnaissance mission, so we didn’t stop.

How many times have I failed to stop?

But I got a second chance this time.

To be honest, as we were leaving the resort, I had already moved on. I suggested turning left to visit Elkton. But Mr. Pettit reminded me of the market, and we turned right.

Good call.

As we pulled into the parking lot of Massanutten Produce, we were welcomed by a stunning crowd of flowers in pots and hanging baskets.

(A note for curious readers: These places are named after the Massanutten Mountains, an orphan chain of peaks in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. They’re situated between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny ranges. You’re welcome.)

As we walked into the market, we saw carefully arranged displays of fruits and vegetables, a rainbow of edible delights. Exploring further, we came to a selection of house-made baked goods, and my bread-loving heart leaped within me.

Every turn in the compact space brought such unexpected beauty that I almost giggled.

When I finally managed to narrow down my selections, the ladies behind the counter were gracious and sunny. Our brief chat was the perfect conclusion to my visit.

As we drove away, I had a sense of…I can’t find a better term than “well-being.” Once again, we had experienced the pleasure of beholding God’s handiwork, but not on the grand scale of mountain and sea. Here it was sized down to peppers, tomatoes, corn, peaches, cucumbers, and a dozen different varieties of flowers. We encountered delightful people, His sixth-day masterpiece.

But we also saw the result of long hours in the field, the greenhouse, and the kitchen. The market itself didn’t spring up from the ground. Once built, it had to be staffed and maintained. Green beans and squash don’t report for duty and toss themselves into baskets.

The Father set the example for rigorous, creative work when He made the world, and the growers and bakers behind Massanutten Produce followed it.

Our visit reminded me to look for rainbows. In the sky. On the roadside. In the variety of blessings the Lord pours out on each of us.

I also felt a nudge to pray that I’ll recognize and seize opportunities to bring color and joy into the world. Even if it requires hard work. Especially then.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV)
